I’m in New York.

I came up to NYC to visit the rents for the weekend – As you read this I’m hopefully through the rumored longass lines to see the Rain Room at the MoMA.  The exhibit ends July 28th so there’s only a week left! I’ve heard mixed reviews… some people loved it and some people thought it was a waste of hours of their lives. hmmm…

While we’re on the topic of New York, I wanted to introduce you to the website:  Humans of New York

Humans of New York is a project created by Brandon, a bond trader turned photographer, who goes around New York taking photos of people and hearing their stories.  In the section about the photographer, he says “I’ve taken nearly 5,000 portraits and written 50 stories. And I’ve met some amazing people along the way.

The captions under the photos are equally as awesome and fun to read as viewing the photos 🙂 Take some time and scroll through – maybe you’ll even see someone you know (I know less than 10 people in NYC but I can’t help looking for them)! The photographer even has a book coming out that would make a great addition to a lonely coffee table!

Hope you’re enjoying your Monday!

Tuesday Dudesday: Rappers N Rappers N Rappers

A famous philosopher once said
“Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis – When I was dead broke, man I couldn’t picture this – 50-inch screen, money green leather sofa – Got two rides, a limousine with a chauffeur”
– Notorious BIG

Whoa Whoa Whoa. BIG I heard of that guy … he was a thug … a hoodlum … a DRUG DEALER …. true true – and Socrates fondled little boys – it’s all about context people.

Which kinda sorta gets me to my topic of the day… My new favorite site for all things music (in this case Rap) related is Rap Genius.

This site not only breaks a lot of new and awesome music it also takes each line bit by bitbyte by byte and explains every lyric in (sometimes) painstakingly detail.

Some of my favorite include:

I think that all the silence is worse than all the violence
Fear is such a weak emotion, that’s why I despise it
We scared of almost everything, afraid to even tell the truth
So scared of what you think of me, I’m scared of even telling you
Sometimes I’m like the only person I feel safe to tell it to
I’m locked inside a cell in me, I know that there’s a jail in you
Consider this your bailing out, so take a breath, inhale a few
My screams is finally getting free, my thoughts is finally yelling through”
– Lupe Fiasco – Words I never Said

– Kendrick Lamar – Don’t Kill My Vibe
and don’t forget…
– Jay Z – 03′ Bonnie & Clyde (dedicated to my Bonnie)

Check out the site for more.

Tatted Christmas.

Tattly is a website that sells beautiful temporary tattoos – I’m talking ones that adults would be proud to sport (they definitely were – in my family, at least). I love the inspiration behind the site, too. The founder said she was tired of her young daughter wearing “clip art fake tattoos.” Amen.

So I got my whole family some for Christmas.

There were 8 of us celebrating Christmas down in Florida this year so I ended up getting 4 sets of 8: the Black Set, Nautical Set, Watch Set, and  Premier Set.  My dad was the first one to put one on – and the first spot he picked was his neck! That quickly led to a family of neck tattooed people which, as you can probably tell by my photos below, is hilarious for us. Oh, and the dog got one, too!

(PS… I made this gif at Picasion GIF maker – so easy!)

After applying all our tattoos, we headed to the Madagascar Ice exhibit and then the next day, to  The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. – At both places we definitely got some stares.

tat4My mom’s tattoo was my favorite – it looked so real and good with her short hair! I also loved my diamond knuckles and even got a few inquiries about them being real! Hmm….

These small gifts were definitely a hit among my family members and just made me want a tattoo that much more.  Maybe a tattoo will happen in 2013.

Hope you had a great Christmas, holidays, new year, everything.

Trading Noise.

I was perusing YouTube over the weekend and decided to check in on the only person I subscribe to (I don’t usually visit YouTube on a subscribing level..):  Noah.

I love this kid – he is so talented! What originally brought me to his YouTube page was his rendition of LMFAO’s “Sexy and I know it.”  That video had a link in it which led me to a website where I could download it for FREE: NoiseTrade

NoiseTrade Homepage

Basically, NoiseTrade is a website where artists can offer free downloads of their music. This is perfect for start up bands and artists!

To get a song, all you do is go to the artist’s NoiseTrade page (ex: Noah). Then, put in your email and zip code under the photo and moments later, you get a file emailed to you.  You also have the option of donating to that artist on their page.

On NoiseTrade’s homepage, you can search the website by artist, by genre, or scroll down and see new additions, popular downloads, and more. I definitely recommend checking it out – what a great way to discover new artists – then you can say you discovered them first (and buy the “I listen to bands that don’t even exist yet”shirt)!

Uncork it.

Hey! Happy Cinco de Mayo!

So a few weeks ago, BF informed me that we had plans “from 1-3 on April 24th” but it was a surprise. This obviously led me to immediately be overwhelmed with curiosity – for 2 hours? On Easter!? I bet he’s taking me to church (—just kidding…).  I had no idea.

Finally, Easter morning rolls around and, after a breakfast consisting mostly of Starburst jelly beans (my fave!), he informed me that we would be sipping wine, eating dessert, and painting that afternoon! He had (via LivingSocial – love it!) discovered Uncork’d and planned a surprise date!

Uncork’d, based in the DC Design Center, is such a cool concept! They invite local artists to come and be a guest “instructor” of sorts. Each “instructor”/artist comes with their own style – creating the “theme” of the session – and a unique experience everytime (as I can only imagine, at least – I’ve only been once.)

Our “theme” was abstract art (our session was “Just for fun”) and the artist who was our “instructor” was Lisa Jones. Lisa is a pretty well-known artist and has done some work for some famous athletes.

There are other themes offered by Uncork’d including: Couples Retreat, Alter Ego, Ladies Night, and Stress Reliever Saturdays. Check them out!

BF & I had so much fun sipping wine and being surrounded by creativity! It was fun to see the different paintings that resulted from Lisa’s painting (which was displayed to be everyone’s ‘insipration’). Here are some photos of our day:

The Uncork’d session we did (again, it was called “Just For Fun”) makes for a great date! I can imagine it being an especially good spot for newish daters because a) it’s during the day (or can be…), b) you’re not forced to sit across the tables, staring at each other as you awkwardly make small talk and c) it’s fun and you walk away with new art or at least a souvenir!

7Side inspiration.

Oh hey, Wednesday! Hurry up and be over so I can be closer to the weekend, k? Thanks.

So today’s post might be kinda familiar to some of you but… I just wanted to share with you, once again, my brother’s blog/talents and update you a little.  Below is a shortened version of a post I wrote a while back. With an update at the end.

Good morning!

Today’s blog is actually belongs to my (older) brother, Matt. He went to Virginia Tech and majored in Industrial Design. In other words, he may actually like art and design even more than ME! Matt is really into making things…

7Side Design …. allows you to peek into his artsy brain; from his hands-on projects and hobbies to his unique inspirations and experiences. This guy, who designs BOATS by day, leads a seriously awesomely art-infused life (in FLORIDA no less!)!

I think my favorite thing that Matt has created is one of his first 7Side projects, the Sanguine Dresser. I mean… it’s a dresser AND a shoe rack AND a headboard… how cool is that?! Another one of my favorite projects that Matt… made me my very own “e.” I seriously love it. (see below. )

Honestly, I think that 7Side Design is a great up-and-coming blog/company (and I’m not just saying that because he’s my brother). I seriously can’t wait to not only SEE more but hopefully one day OWN more of Matt’s creations!

Since that posting, a little over a year ago, Matt has done more work, like his wooden wall installations. Originally, I was thinking about having him come, and/or send me the supplies, to install our very own wooden wall up in our loft. Then I realized that the only real wall the loft has continues into a stairwell, and down the stairs, into the “entryway” – way too much wooden wall (especially for a rental..) – so we may have to make it more of an accent PIECE instead of accent WALL.

His walls look so cool though! I love all the different shades (which are totally natural!) The walls are seriously something straight out of Anthropologie (only one of my favorite stores of all time). Below are pictures taken from the 7side Design Blog:

Visit 7side Design’s blog and check out all his awesome creations! Happy Hump Day!

Mundane Monday. Once again.

Happy Mundane Monday!

I know it’s been a while since I blogged. I hate it. I hate how I used to blog every day and then once I stopped, it has just been stupidly hard to start up again. So I’m not even going to make any promises… I’m just going to do my best to keep up with it.

The blog I want to share with you today is one that I just discovered a few days ago. I discovered it and then proceeded to read it and obsess. It’s called:

The Craft Begins is a blog that kinda reminds me of my own (or at least how I envision my own being). It is full of slightly random, yet still artsy topics/images ranging from art, fashion, and photography,  to cooking, interior design, and anything else she may find inspirational.

Here is a full list of her content:

Right up my alley!!

Check out The Craft Begins – I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I do!

Have a good week!

Weekend fun.

So… not last weekend but the weekend before, my parents came for a quick visit. They hopped off the plane and I took them straight to Irvine Contemporary, a tiny gallery on 14th street. It was Alexa Meade’s last day of her exhibit! We walked in and she was actually there doing an installation.

Alexa Meade (who by the way is like.. super young! I always imagined her being in her late 30s+) had painted this guy blue and was photographing him when we got there. It was so cool to see her in action – and kind of trippy to see this guy in real life when your brain totally wanted to tell you was a painting.

Here are some pics I took (with my phone):

Oh… and here is a piece of art in my parent’s hotel… Loved it so I have to share (it’s a scene painted on slices of tree trunks!!!!):

Not only did we check out Alexa Meade’s exhibit that weekend, we also met up with my cousin and hit up the National Building Museum and saw the Solar Decathlon exhibit. Unfortunately, the Lego exhibit’s line was super long (and cost money) so we skipped that one.

After the Building Museum, we ate  lunch at Jaleo. I had never eaten there but.. MAN am I a fan now! We seriously had a feast (on Tapas!!). Our favorite item of the day (although they all were AMAZING) was the “Papas arrugas.” Here’s the description:

Canary Island-style wrinkled baby potatoes served with mojo verde (cilantro, cumin, garlic, Sherry vinegar and olive oil sauce)

I’m seriously going to try my best to duplicate this sauce… we were dipping everything we could find in it once we ran out of mini potatoes (I’m talking grape sized)!! My mom found a similar recipe I’m going to have to try. (click image below for recipe).

Sorry this turned into kind of a long post… but seriously. Check out Alexa Meade’s website… and DEFINITELY check out Jaleo. They have locations in DC, Bethesda, and Crystal City.

Happy Friday eve!!!
